Francis Asbury was America’s greatest Methodist leader.

He was born near Birmingham, England, and had become a Christian by 1759. After working as a blacksmith from 1759 to 1765, he became a local preacher about 1766. After serving on several circuits during the period from 1776 to 1771, he came to America in 1771 at his own request.

He became Wesley’s general assistant in America. He preached all through the middle and southern colonies and set up a system of circuit riders to spread Methodism swiftly and widely. In 1788 he and Thomas Coke were elected by the church as superintendents.

Asbury travelled 300,000 miles, preached tirelessly, and received several thousand preachers into the American Methodist church. The Methodists in America numbered over 200,000 by the time of his death.
